I’m Lynn Gruwez, an experienced clinical psychologist working with adults across a range of mental health conditions, including mood disorders such as depression and anxiety as well as complex conditions.

My therapeutic approach is unique, in that I will combine Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with other techniques, integrating principles from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT).

My goal as a therapist is to see each person as someone unique and human. I seek to understand in depth the nature of any mental health symptoms so that I can flexibly and creatively adapt therapy to suit your circumstances. My approach is holistic and empathetic, and my core values are trust, respect and kindness. I believe my considerate and compassionate approach, combined with my specialist training in clinical psychology, ensures that I can provide the highest level of care to help you with self-awareness, acceptance and strategies for resilience.

I believe in a holistic, non-judgemental approach where clients have the space and freedom to share their fears without constraint.

Expertise

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT focuses on how thoughts can affect behaviour and the effect that these processes can have on our emotions. During therapy, we will focus on changing thought patterns and cognitive processes to subsequently change behaviour and improve emotional stability. I have extensive experience using CBT as my university degree focused on the application of CBT in clinical psychology.

CBT can be particularly helpful if someone has negative beliefs, dysfunctional schemas or attachment styles that could have been shaped since childhood. These negative thoughts can cause anxiety and destructive patterns of behaviour. CBT helps to identify negative self perception and how this can influence an individual, whether it’s related to their relationships, work or lifestyle habits.

CBT can be particularly helpful in addiction because it helps to uncover the core reasons for addictive behaviour and what led to it. The underlying reasons for the addiction are addressed and replaced with healthier coping mechanisms.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy (MBT)

MBT is based on the principles of mindfulness, where you learn to observe what is happening in the present moment from a non-judgemental, open and curious point of view. During the therapeutic process, I’ll guide you to observe your thoughts and emotions with kindness and acceptance so that you can see them objectively.

Often, depression can cause people to focus on the past, while anxiety can make people preoccupied with the future and ‘what if’. MBT is helpful because it allows patients to focus on the present and enjoy moments as they happen. Similarly, with addiction MBT is helpful because it assists individuals with gaining control over cravings and urges.

“We can’t stop the waves, but we can learn how to surf”. Jon Kabat-Zinn

Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) encourages people to embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them. ACT is a process of accepting existing thoughts, emotions or circumstances that are causing suffering or difficulties, rather than trying to stop them altogether. By accepting and acknowledging anxious or depressive thoughts it prevents them from taking over, allowing you to move past them with compassion and kindness for yourself.

This will help you to live a more meaningful life, enjoying the things you truly value. This helps you to live and behave in ways consistent with your personal values while developing psychological flexibility and resilience.

“A unique empirically based psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies, together with commitment and behavior change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility.”

“Step out of your mind and into your life.” Steven C. Hayes

My approach to therapy

Therapy

I believe that therapy starts with getting to know my patients before tackling any difficult issues. My ultimate goal during therapy is to create a comfortable, trusting and non-judgemental space to talk about any issues or difficulties at your own pace. Therapy will be tailored to your preferences and there is no rush to talk about anything until you feel completely comfortable.

My therapeutic approach is focused on emotions and their interaction with our thoughts and behaviours. By learning how to identify, understand and regulate our emotions this can significantly improve the symptoms of most mental health conditions. This is why I integrate acceptance and mindfulness approaches into therapy, as they are based on improving emotional intelligence.

I also have extensive experience in group therapy, so if you are currently engaging in group therapy (for addictions or other mental health conditions) I can provide you with advice and guidance on how to get the most out of these sessions.

When developing your treatment, I believe in a creative and human approach and I consider myself compassionate, empathetic and open-minded when developing treatment strategies with you.

Psychoeducation

A key part of my therapeutic approach is psychoeducation (psychological education) about the mental health condition that is concerning you or your loved one. Psychoeducation is crucial as it allows you to better understand your symptoms, the underlying neurobiological mechanisms and increase self-awareness. This is important for both patients and their families, as improving understanding of the condition will help with treatment.

I will provide easily understandable information during the sessions, personalised to your unique symptoms and circumstances. I’ll also recommend a range of simple and informative resources, including websites, videos and podcasts. I can also recommend a range of applications (accessed by smartphones or tablets) that can help with symptoms or creating healthy habits.

Training and education

I’m a registered Clinical Psychologist, with over seven years of clinical experience. I completed my Psychology degree at the University of Psychology of Málaga in 2013, after which I specialised in Clinical Psychology through the Sanitary Master in Clinical Practice (2014, AEPCCC / European Foundation of Psychology). My professional experience is versatile, I’ve worked as a Clinical Psychologist in several residential outpatient treatment centres for psychotherapy, general psychiatry, addiction recovery, eating disorders and rehabilitation. I keep up to date with the latest scientific studies in psychology by researching academic journals and publications, attending workshops and courses, as well as listening to TED talks and podcasts. I love to discuss new ideas and research with my patients. More recently, I have obtained other qualifications by enrolling in courses; I try to maintain up to date by attending frequent online events and self-studying on topics that I find interesting. Some of the courses I have gained accreditation in are:
  • Existential well being counselling, a person-centred experiential approach, KU Leuven (2020).
  • Identifying early signs of Psychosis in adolescents and young adults, Stanford University (2020).
  • Introduction to Mindfulness-based Emotional Regulation, UAMx University of Madrid (2020).

My personal interests

I’m originally from Belgium but consider Andalucía, in Spain, my home. I moved to Spain with my parents when I was only ten years old, and very soon I fell in love with the culture, beautiful nature and weather, and the passion and warmth of the people. Due to my multicultural background, I grew up multilingual, speaking Dutch, Spanish and English and understand the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity for each of my patients.

Some of my favourite hobbies include travelling, cooking, gardening, music and yoga. In my free time, every weekend, I go for long mountain walks. I find this contact with nature relaxes me and makes me feel whole, it creates an inner sense of peace. In October 2020, I started with a new project (something that was on my bucket list), which involves having an allotment (piece of land). The land is in a little community of people, and I grow my vegetables and herbs. It’s a challenge, but the beauty of it is the fact that everyone helps each other.

My interests in mindfulness-based activities and nature influences my treatment approach as I believe these activities can be extremely helpful in relieving stress and fostering a healthy relationship with one’s emotions. I encourage my patients to find their way of developing activities that calm and relax them, to help them gain an inner sense of peace in a way that they find enjoyable.

Patient success stories

I can't say enough good things about Lynn! I had a complex presentation of different mental health problems, and I had already worked with several other therapists, with limited success. Lynn carefully grew to understand my difficulties and symptoms, and planned therapy in ways that suited me. Her therapy and guidance has brought me a long way, and I always turn to her first when I have difficult situations to deal with.
As my therapist I found Lynn to be an excellent listener, highly empathetic and very incisive in her analysis of my situation. She brought a light and warm touch to the process whilst also being appropriately challenging and she used a wide array of tools including art therapy very effectively. She was sensitive and kind to me with an engaging sense of humour and at the same time very committed to helping me to achieve a constructive and positive outcome. I found the therapy to be enormously helpful and to have had a very positive impact on my life.
I spent six months as an inpatient at a clinic at which Lynn was employed as a clinical psychologist. Whilst Lynn was not directly my psychologist she was heavily involved in my day to day life at the clinic.I feel truly blessed that Lynn was put on my path to recovery. She was a constant reassuring presence over the course of my stay at the clinic, always insightful and understanding, infectiously enthusiastic and deeply committed to the recovery of every patient at the clinic. Lynn radiates a positive energy that one cannot help but influenced by, my best subconscious efforts to remain comfortably miserable were futile! Over two (sober) years later, it is with great fondness that I think back on all the times I spent with Lynn; playing games, chatting and laughing, going for walks in the countryside or bike-rides by the beach. She has helped me tremendously over the course of my recovery and I am forever grateful to have known her.
Lynn was my primary therapist for three months in the summer of 2019 while I was an inpatient receiving treatment for a depressive episode of bipolar. She helped me to feel comfortable and safe in a new environment during a time when I was very vulnerable. Lynn is incredibly empathetic, she is also kind. It is Lynn’s kindness that sets her apart from and above other professionals I have seen. She never pushed me to speak about things before I was ready, and was always encouraging, supportive and helpful when I was ready to talk. During educational sessions Lynn taught me theoretical models to understand my condition, and practical skills to help me to cope with and improve my situation. In other settings she gave me the space to talk about anything I wanted to voice; whatever I said was always met with understanding and compassion. I felt very comfortable being open with Lynn — she is easy to talk to and I always felt that I was being listened to properly; I never worried about being judged, in turn, these things enabled me to be honest with myself which aided my improvement to a huge degree. Lynn is an intuitive person and she is able to use this with great effect for the benefit of her patients. I will be forever grateful for how much Lynn helped me.
Our adult son had a very challenging psychiatric condition, including very severe depression and anxiety. He was completely unable to cope with life and was despairing of finding someone who could help him get better. Lynn has been his psychotherapist for over a year now and, in liaison with psychiatrists, has transformed him into someone who can face the world again. Lynn is highly skilled and extremely kind, supportive and empathetic. She has always been ready to support our son in her calm and caring way, however challenging his condition. She is excellent at tailoring her approach to the particular needs of her client. Our son was happy for Lynn to maintain contact with us directly and she has been excellent at keeping us updated on his condition, and at liaising with us and with his psychiatrists. She has made us feel part of her team and the results she has achieved are wonderful.
(parents from a patient)
I met Lynn, when I was admitted to a wellbeing facility. At the time I was in the grips of prescription-pill addiction tied with unhealthy behaviours. Out of the many health professionals I had encountered up to this point, Lynn was a real game changer for me, by the simple fact she listened to me without preconceived notions or judgement. Despite being only a few years older than I was at the time, Lynn had a pronounced nurturing side that would come out during non-therapy moments, in the way she actively would judge how I was doing from my behaviour and act appropriately. During my therapy sessions which were done on a bi-weekly basis, over an eight week period; Lynn, without being direct/explicit, helped me form inner tools that would help me through my ‘difficult patch’ and in the future. More than tools, she helped me change the way I perceive and interpret the outside world, essentially she changed the way I think and reflect. She over the first few sessions had made an accurate account of all the different aspects of my life in depth. At the time as I was in the midst of addiction, I had forgotten who I was. She subtly catalysed the return of my personality, and allowed me to understand what true self- acceptance means. She did this by creating a space in which I could really open up about my hard built opinions and views built over time by significant situations. She would discuss and show me a healthier way of rationalising those thoughts, as despite many of my views and outlooks being justified, in the long term were causing me to have a negative view of the world. It is difficult to really explain what exactly Lynn has done in words, but if it wasn’t for me being assigned to her- my quality of life would not have ever improved, and ultimately, I would have lived a very unfulfilling and sad life. Becoming clean if always a good start, however the true reasons to why those eight weeks were the most significant, lies with Lynn and her overall approach to psychological treatment, in a way that cannot be taught.
