My name is Dr Gemma Luke, a consultant clinical psychologist. I have been working in the field of mental health for over 20 years, and as a qualified clinical psychologist since 2011.

I understand that acknowledging difficulties in coping can be a challenge in itself, but I believe that we all experience stressors that can impact our mental health and emotional wellbeing at some point in our lives. I can assure that I will provide you with a warm, empathic and non-judgemental space in which to explore, learn and grow.

In my practice I utilise evidence-based, proven therapeutic interventions that are recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Evidence (NICE), alongside somatic theory and techniques. I creatively combine approaches in an integrative way so as to ensure that you receive an individualised treatment approach which encompasses body and mind. I believe in facilitating collaboration and choice throughout the therapeutic process as I consider this essential in enhancing patient confidence, self-esteem and resilience, which will in turn support you to embed your learning and empower you when facing future challenges.

I am passionate about promoting positive mental health and strive to work holistically with both mind and body to help my clients achieve lasting change.

Expertise

Self-esteem

I specialise in improving self-esteem which, in my opinion, is fundamental to any mental health diagnosis. From anxiety to depression, or complex trauma to psychosis, ongoing symptomatology can result in perceived loss of control, be overwhelming, and significantly impact your self-esteem. I work collaboratively with my patients to empower them to take control of their symptoms and make positive steps forwards. I believe that with the right support, you’ll be able to overcome your symptoms and regain your confidence. I’ve witnessed many of my clients become stronger, more self-aware and more capable of handling challenges. The tools you will learn during your therapeutic journey will remain with you, allowing you to apply them and better manage future hurdles.

Working with the mind and body

In addition to my extensive training as a psychologist, I am a 200-hour qualified yoga teacher. Through this I have learnt first hand the importance of working holistically with the mind and body together. In therapy we can explore and enhance your understanding how psychological difficulties can manifest physiologically, learn grounding techniques which regulate the nervous system, and become more in tune with the physical sensations which provide clues to identifying triggers. Once you begin to feel in tune with and in control of your body, we can progress onto exploring the deeper underlying psychological mechanisms that have been maintaining your difficulty.

Psychological Assessments

Alongside my clinical work, I regularly conduct assessments for Family and Criminal Courts. I have extensive experience in risk assessments where there may be the presentation of psychological problems or difficulties, such as offending behaviours, personality disorder, complex mental health conditions. Further, I am trained in providing opinion and assessment in relation to risk around ability to keep oneself and one’s children safe.

I also carry out non-court related assessments, such as cognitive and memory functioning, and personality traits.

My approach to therapy and treatment plans

I firmly believe that everybody’s experience is unique and as such I will work with you to ensure the best possible outcomes. Therapy will always be patient-led and collaborative. This means that you will be involved in developing your personalised treatment plan to ensure it is tailored to your needs and preferences.

To ensure therapy that is always tailored to each individual patient’s need I work integratively. This means that I carefully combine elements from different psychological approaches in order to create a bespoke treatment plan.

Somatic therapy

For me, a thorough understanding of how we carry much of our distress in our body, often perpetuating our difficulty, is an essential foundation to therapy.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

I use elements of CBT, as I find that many clients like the structured approach, and understanding how our thoughts are linked to our physical sensations can be particularly helpful.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

I may introduce DBT techniques to help alleviate severe symptoms and improve emotional regulation.

Compassion-focused therapy

This is focused on developing your self-compassion, which can help to improve your self-esteem and personal wellbeing. It allows you to reflect and understand your difficulties without being too harsh or judging yourself. Finally, it encourages you to reconnect with yourself.

Mindfulness therapy

I aim to make mindfulness techniques more accessible and easier to implement for people who feel chronically stressed. I bring mindfulness into everyday activities that enable you to ground yourself and reduce anxiety throughout the day, so that you can reconnect with yourself and the present moment.

Medication

As a psychologist I do not prescribe medication. However, I fully support medication as an adjunct to therapy where required, and can work alongside your psychiatrist to support you with this.

Training and education

I’m accredited as a Clinical Psychologist by the British Psychological Society and Health & Care Professions Council, specialising in CBT, DBT, Somatic, Compassion Focused and Mindfulness Therapies. I also have extensive experience working as a Psychologist in Family and Criminal Courts. I’ve been working as a Clinical Psychologist privately and within the NHS since 2011, and I’m also the Director of my own private psychology clinic.

I completed my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Canterbury Christchurch University, my MSc in Forensic Psychology at the University of Kent, and undertook my BSc in Psychology & Criminology at Staffordshire University.

Alongside my clinical work, I’ve published and co-authored several academic papers and presented at conferences on topics such as how mindfulness therapy can benefit patients with depression, recovery training, and the role of cultural gender-emotion stereotypes in emotional perception. I’m passionate about understanding the latest evidence-based research so that I can better help the clients that I see in the clinic. I also regularly attend training sessions and workshops to expand my skill set, and recently completed several courses on yoga for anxiety, yoga teacher training, and somatic therapy for treating trauma.

My personal interests

Outside of work I spend time with my family in the Sussex countryside. I enjoy walking in the forest and paddleboarding on the sea. I also enjoy a regular yoga practice. I am currently exploring combining two of my passions; yoga and paddleboarding, which is making for some interesting and rather soggy outings!

Patient success stories

I’d really recommend this service. Gemma helped me immensely through lockdown. She is incredibly understanding but also pushed me when needed. Gemma was kind, friendly, supportive, and was always willing to go the extra mile to support me. I quite honestly don’t think I'd be here without such support. - J, 18
I can’t recommend Dr Luke enough. Through a series of sessions she helped me to understand issues I had carried for many years and shared ways to help me cope with these issues and continue with my life. She is very kind and approachable and helped me no end. - L, 43
I approached Gemma for help with my daughter who was struggling with a whole host of difficulties. We started the process feeling overwhelmed by our experiences but left feeling like we had a really good handle on the situation. Both my husband and I would definitely recommend Gemma. - S, 36
