My name is Dr Regina Sala and I’m an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist working with children, adolescents, young adults and families.

I currently work as a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist for the East London NHS Foundation Trust (rated as Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission) and offer private appointments in central London. In addition to my specialist training in General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, I also hold a PhD in Psychiatry and a Master’s degree in Integrative Psychotherapy.

As a doctor, I aim to create a respectful and compassionate environment to ensure that you feel comfortable and safe to discuss any difficulties. I pride myself in providing excellent standards of care while integrating my knowledge of evidence-based research, which I developed while training at some of the most prestigious psychiatry clinics and scientific institutes globally.

I believe every patient deserves to be listened to in a caring and approachable manner. Treatment for mental health conditions should be holistic and designed to foster self-awareness, resilience and empowerment for both parents and their children.

I specialise in providing assessment, diagnosis and holistic treatment for individuals with attention and behavioural difficulties, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders, affective disorders (anxiety, depression and bipolar), cognitive difficulties, medically unexplained symptoms and sleep problems.

I see my patients as human beings and aim to foster a sincere and relaxed environment so that we can build trust during our sessions.

My approach to therapy and treatment

When beginning therapy, I will always start with a comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate current difficulties and your child’s strengths. I’ll also take a history of your child’s development to try and better understand any emotional, biological, social or environmental factors that could be playing a part. Finally, I’ll offer my clinical impression and diagnosis, so that we can begin developing a joint personalised treatment plan according to you and your child’s needs.

The clinical assessment may involve screening questionnaires, standardised diagnostic tests and liaison or reports completed by other family members, schools or professionals, if helpful.

I believe a healthy childhood provides a foundation for positive wellbeing throughout life, and helps your child to develop to their full potential. I believe resilience, even when faced with difficult circumstances, is a key skill that psychiatry and psychotherapy can help your child to develop. With the right help and support, we can address these difficulties early on and treat the deeper roots of an issue, rather than trying to treat symptoms later in life.

I see my patients as human beings and aim to foster a sincere and relaxed environment so that we can build trust during our sessions. I regularly integrate neuroscience principles with a mind-body approach to achieve balanced emotional and physical wellbeing.

When developing a joint treatment plan, I offer different approaches to suit your individual preferences and lifestyle. I believe in multimodal, evidence-based techniques offer the best chance of improvement and regularly combine psychoeducation and psychotherapy with positive parenting, lifestyle interventions and medication (when appropriate).

Some of the approaches I regularly use include:

  • Psychoeducation: support and information about the condition so that symptoms can be managed better.
  • Psychotherapy: psychological talking therapies. I predominantly use Cognitive-Behavioural therapy (CBT), family therapy (systemic therapy), play therapy, social skills therapy, interpersonal therapy or mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.
  • Parenting techniques: empower parents through positive techniques to support and understand your child’s symptoms.
  • Behavioural learning techniques: developed in association with your child’s school.
  • Stress reduction: mindfulness techniques and mind-body exercises.
  • Lifestyle interventions: nutritional changes, exercise, supplements and sleep therapy.
  • Medication: if required.

My approach to medication

I believe that the need for medication needs to be considered very carefully, especially in the case of children and adolescents. There are both benefits and side effects associated with medications, so these need to be compared with the benefits of other types of treatments.

If your child does need medication, I will always ensure it’s appropriate for their age and condition. Medication plans will usually be integrated with psychological talking therapies. Parents of the child will always be involved in the decision process and educated about the benefits and risks of the medication. I also have extensive experience in assessing a young person’s capacity to understand and make decisions about their mental health and treatment plan, including psychotropic medication.

Training and education

I currently work as a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist leading the Clinical and Research multidisciplinary Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Disorder Team for the East London NHS Foundation Trust (rated as Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission) and offer private appointments in central London. I’ve also trained and worked at some of the most prestigious clinical psychiatric institutes and medical centres globally, including the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Cornell University, USA, and New York State Psychiatry Institute, Columbia University, USA. Having completed my Medical Doctor degree at the University of Barcelona in 2003, I then went on to specialise in General Psychiatry in Spain in 2008, followed by further specialist training Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (ranked as one of the top hospitals in the USA) in 2010.
