I am an experienced Consultant psychiatrist and psychotherapist with over ten years of experience working with individuals of any age, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood.

I specialise in Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy and integrate this with a range of other approaches, depending on the needs of the individual. My dynamic and flexible approach is strengthened by my years working in the National Health Service, both in the UK and Spain.

Whether you are looking for help for yourself or your child, I can use a range of integrated therapeutic approaches to reduce stress and any symptoms. Mental health cannot be isolated from other aspects of our life, so I believe any treatment approach needs to be holistic and take into account the whole person as an individual.

My unique experience as a psychiatrist includes working with individuals of any age, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood. I have worked for many years with people who have suffered from trauma, whether it is from childhood or a more complex type of trauma. I offer specialised support for parents who have children with ADHD, Autism, or other difficulties, by providing personalised parenting workshops to help them better support their child.

I can also help people with physical conditions, such as fibromyalgia, chronic pain and tinnitus, as often people suffering from these conditions don’t receive enough support for their mental health.

I believe in a positive psychiatry approach, empowering both children and adults to overcome any difficulties by providing education and support on their condition, along with a holistic and personalised treatment plan.

My approach to therapy and treatment plans

I believe that treatment for any condition will benefit most from a holistic treatment plan, that takes into account both biological and clinical factors. Mental health cannot be isolated as a set of purely biological symptoms, so any mental health conditions should be treated holistically with a whole-person approach.

When someone comes to me for help, whether it’s for you or your child, I will always ensure that I understand all the relevant symptoms and circumstances surrounding any difficulties. I will conduct a clinical assessment and discuss your or your child’s history to ensure that I have the full clinical picture before recommending a personalised treatment plan. I will always take into account your personal preferences when developing a treatment plan.

When creating a treatment plan, I will include a range of complementary approaches. These could include:
  • Psychoeducation: support and information about the condition so that symptoms can be managed better
  • Psychotherapy: psychological therapy with an EMDR focus. However, I will integrate aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT), psychodynamic and family therapy, depending on you or your child’s needs.
  • Medication: the need for medication will be assessed depending on the severity of symptoms and taking into account your personal preferences.
  • Sleep therapy: I have a strong focus on enhancing sleep in both adults and children. By optimising sleep, we can improve your symptoms and improve your health. Some strategies could include focusing on sleep hygiene, sleep management strategies for parents with children who struggle to sleep and sensory-based interventions. I have even worked with artists and elite professional athletes to help them attain a more efficient sleep for optimal performance.
  • Exercise therapy: I regularly incorporate techniques from somatic therapy, yoga and body-based meditation to improve the mind-body connection, which can subsequently improve symptoms. Somatic therapy is incredibly helpful for enhancing the mind-body connection and as a relaxation technique, by rebalancing the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, through guided exercises focusing on posture and body movement.
  • Lifestyle interventions: I always take into account nutrition and physical activity when assessing symptoms as I understand the importance of a healthy, balanced lifestyle to support optimal health.

My approach to medication

I believe that medication is a useful tool that can be helpful in reducing symptoms, and in my personal practice, I only prescribe medication when it is needed. I usually only prescribe medication in combination with other treatment approaches, such as psychoeducation about the condition and it’s symptoms, or in conjunction with therapy.

Training and education

I am an accredited Consultant psychiatrist and psychotherapist, specialising in Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. I have been working as a Consultant psychiatrist with the NHS in the UK for three years and work with teams focusing on emotional and behavioural approaches. I have a professional certification for EMDR Therapy in children and adults, as well as Level 1 certification in level on Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT). I am an accredited member of EMDR UK & Ireland and EMDRIA.

Before this, I completed my studies and high specialised psychiatry training (CCT equivalent) in Spain, and I hold a University of Seville postgraduate certification in both Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Systemic Psychotherapy.

I have worked between London and Spain for many years, so I am well versed in the clinical and healthcare systems in both countries. As a result, I have benefited from building a wide and varied professional network with leading experts in psychology, trauma, and ENT.

I am a member of the Royal College of psychiatrists in the UK and regularly collaborate with academic psychiatrists on research projects and clinical studies. I am Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at Queen Mary’s University London (QMUL) and work with Rethink Mental Health Group as a panel member and reviewer. I have also collaborated with researchers at the Institute of Psychology, Psychiatry & Neuroscience at King’s College London, where I spent five months working on a research study investigating suicide and insight.

I am also a British Association For Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM) Certified Practitioner, as I often help artists and performers with overcoming difficulties or enhancing creativity and performance.

I regularly keep up-to-date with the latest groundbreaking research in my areas of speciality by reading research papers published in the British Medical Journal and British Journal of Psychiatry. When working with patients with specific or complex cases, I often conduct my research and review the literature to ensure I’m informed about the latest evidence-based clinical approaches.

Conditions I treat

I am specialised in the assessment and treatment of a range of adult mental health problems, including:
Depression Anxiety Disorders Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Social Anxiety Panic Disorder Agoraphobia Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Complex Trauma Dissociation Chronic pain Chronic fatigue Fibromyalgia Tinnitus and Vertigo ADHD ASD Learning Disability Enhancing performance: Performance arts Performance anxiety Work performance Poor academic performance Attachment difficulties Parenting programmes, workshops and training Perinatal psychiatry

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

Many people who come to see me are confused about what EMDR Therapy is and how it works. EMDR is a powerful type of therapy because it helps you to break negative, cyclic behavioural patterns and emotional responses, even if these have built up over many years. EMDR can even help with behaviours, thoughts or emotions that we can’t consciously control or understand. EMDR is quite a flexible approach because I can integrate aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy and family therapy, to suit your needs.

Clinical research into EMDR is highly promising, with some studies finding that 80-90% of people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) no longer having symptoms after three EMDR sessions. For people with multiple traumatic experiences, 77% of patients no longer had PTSD after six sessions.

EMDR is a structured approach that places equal importance on your past, present and future. It usually takes place over several sessions as the preparation in the initial stage is crucial for the treatment to be effective.

Preliminary stage: in this initial phase, I will focus on making sure that you feel safe and ready to revisit any difficult experiences in your past. This stage is crucial preparation for the subsequent stage, as emotional regulation is critical when revisiting events so that you can break the pattern in any negative thoughts or emotions. In building your skills in emotional regulation, you will be able to get the most out of the therapy, and it will help your ability to handle future events and problems better.

Reprocessing stage: in this stage, I will help you to revisit experiences or periods that you found distressing or difficult while directing your eye movements (such as a period in childhood or adolescence, or a traumatic event). You will not necessarily need to revisit these periods for a long time, as you just will need to ‘float back’ briefly. This won’t be distressing for you due to the preparation you have done in the introductory stage, and you will be under the guidance of a trusted therapist. In this stage, you will be able to reprocess and move past any negative emotions or patterns associated with this experience. This stage is the one that is most commonly depicted on YouTube videos of EMDR, where you will typically see videos of people with the therapist guiding eye movements. EMDR is very different to hypnosis because you are fully conscious and able to regulate your emotions while revisiting these experiences.

Future planning stage: by the end of the reprocessing stage, you should feel like you have broken through any negative cyclic patterns, behaviours or thoughts and ready to take advantage of the present in a positive way. Sometimes it’s not necessary to have a separate future planning stage. Still, some patients find it helpful to discuss new strategies for approaching problems and maximising the benefits of their therapy.

I find that many patients who complete EMDR therapy feel empowered to understand and control their emotions better and recognise that their experiences don’t define them. Patients feel they can approach problems proactively; they become more resilient and reconnect with their inner strength.

Workshops for parents

I run personalised workshops for parents to provide training for them in psychoeducation about their child’s condition, symptom management, behavioural plans, boundaries, reinforcing and praising behaviour, managing expectations, communicating with your child, helping your child sleep, motivating them to do homework and reducing their screen time.

These workshops are incredibly helpful regardless of what condition your child has. Typically, parents with children who have autism or ADHD find these workshops very helpful in finding the best way to support their child and improve their family relationships, social life and school performance.

I can also help parents to foster positive attachment styles and have over three years experience in family therapy.

ADHD & Autism

I have extensive experience assessing and diagnosing children with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ADHD and autism. When conducting the standardised assessments (such as ADOS, ADI or DIVA) I always look for symptoms or red flags of other conditions (such as anxiety or depression) that could be worsening symptoms or making a diagnosis more complicated. I see every child as a unique individual and treat them as such, making sure I take into account all of their unique symptoms, medical history and individual circumstances when making a diagnosis and developing a treatment plan.

Adults also come to see me because their ADHD symptoms may have been overlooked until now. ADHD is common and highly underdiagnosed in adults, particularly females. After conducting an assessment with you (link ADHD in adults page), I can help you to manage your symptoms with psychoeducation and medication (if required). Receiving a diagnosis and support for your symptoms can be helpful for addressing a range of symptoms, including improving time management, organisational skills, meeting deadlines, performance at work, keeping track of belongings, managing finances, enhancing personal relationships and communication, and enhancing motivation and focus.

Personal interests: Music, art performance & animals

I’ve always had a passion for music and have been playing the piano since I was four years old! I attended music school until I was 18 years old and faced quite a difficult decision choosing between studying music and medicine. Although I ultimately continued to continue with medicine, I still love playing the piano.

Fortunately, I found a way to combine my career as a psychiatrist with my passion for music and arts through my collaboration with the British Association For Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM) as a Certified Practitioner. Through BAPAM, I regularly help professional artists and musicians with everything from performance anxiety, to overcoming trauma or getting past a creative block. I find it incredibly fulfilling connecting with artists and musicians as part of my work and love helping them to achieve their full creative potential.

I’m also fascinated by animals and had a huge range of pets while I was growing up. I had almost every type of pet you can imagine, including dogs, cats, rabbits, turtles and birds!

When working with children, I regularly incorporate animals into my stories or examples as some children find it easier to understand this way. It’s also an excellent way for me to break the ice with children who might feel shy to ensure that they feel comfortable so that they can see me as a friend with shared interests and not just a doctor!

Patient success stories

One of the most fulfilling things about being a Child and Adolescent psychiatrist is seeing the difference that I can make in a child’s life and how the right support can positively influence their future. About a year ago, I had a 12-year-old child called Harry (name changed for confidentiality) that I saw for an ADHD assessment. Although Harry tested positive for ADHD, I also noticed he had some emotional-based problems. Traditionally, these sorts of symptoms can get overlooked during an ADHD assessment because the assessment is specifically designed to assess neurodevelopmental difficulties. This is why I always keep an eye out for other symptoms or conditions that could be complicating one condition, especially with ADHD, as other comorbid conditions are surprisingly common. I diagnosed Harry with both ADHD and depression, which is a complex diagnosis. I recommended a treatment plan that focused on psychoeducation for both disorders and medication, along with workshops for the parents to understand Harry’s difficulties better and how best to support him. A year later, Harry’s mother approached me because she wanted to let me know how well Harry was doing. She said Harry was much happier, he enjoyed socialising with his friends, and he was doing much better in school this year compared with last year. All of the changes in his mood were due to going beyond the obvious diagnosis of ADHD and treating Harry’s depressive symptoms at the same time.
