I am a consultant psychiatrist with over 15 years of clinical experience.

I specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, including complex cases with anxiety, depression, addiction or other problems.
I specialise in the management of complex cases that often require a multidisciplinary team approach. Where necessary, I am keen to work alongside other mental health professionals such as therapists, nurses or recovery coaches and the patient’s family, if appropriate. By working as a team and incorporating effective communication between all parties, we are often able to realise great relief and satisfaction for the patient and their loved ones.
I always strive to provide the highest standards of care to all my patients. I endeavour to offer personalised and bespoke treatment in order to meet your specific needs.

Areas of Expertise

ADD & ADHD

My expertise lies in ADD & ADHD. During my time as a psychiatrist, I have seen hundreds of patients exhibiting signs and experiencing symptoms of ADD & ADHD that have disrupted their lives in multiple and pervasive ways. I carry out an exhaustive ADHD assessment often taking as long as 2 hours, which investigates a variety of areas across the patient’s life. If a patient has a positive diagnosis, I will take time to educate them about their new diagnosis and field any questions, fears or concerns they may have.

Receiving a psychiatric diagnosis of any nature can bring about greater levels of anxiety, but in many cases it can also provide relief and much needed validation for their struggles. When we move onto deciding upon a treatment plan, I take a collaborative approach with my patient, encouraging them to engage in their own treatment plan. Everyone is unique, for this reason, I make efforts to consider the specific set of circumstances that accompany every patient when I make suggestions for their treatment. It is not uncommon for ADD & ADHD to be accompanied by other conditions, such as addiction or anxiety, for instance. If you would like to learn more about my approach to diagnosing and treating ADHD in the context of somebody with a history of addiction, you can watch a talk I gave at iCAAD 2019 on ADHD and Addiction: things every Addiction specialist should know about ADHD.

I believe in empowering my patients by arming them with as much information and confidence as they need. I recommend a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates cognitive-behavioural therapy and medication, where necessary, to target and counter distressing symptoms. I consider myself and my patient to be a team; together we create accountability and habit-forming strategies to redress the difficulties that ADD, ADHD and comorbidities may be presenting in their life.

OCD

For 4 years I worked in the National OCD Unit in Barcelona in Spain. During this period I acquired significant and extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of OCD, including complex and treatment-resistant cases. I have also published a number of scientific articles in the field of OCD.

If you would like to learn more about my approach to diagnosing and treating OCD, you can watch a talk I gave at iCAAD 2017 on OCD, hoarding disorder and BDD.

Addictions

Addiction Psychiatry is a specialist interest of mine since there is significant overlap with ADD & ADHD. I have extensive experience treating people with alcohol addiction, substance addiction, as well as gambling or trading addiction.

If you would like to learn more about my approach to understanding and treating addictions, you can listen to a podcast with Leanne Spencer from Bodyshot Performance Discussing Alcohol, Dependency, Addiction, ADHD, Anxiety, Dopamine.

My approach to mental health

I have a holistic, biological and cognitive-behavioural approach to mental health. This means I see mental health problems emerging from a combination of factors including biology, genetics, upbringing, psychological tendencies, personality traits and environment. While the genetic component of psychiatric difficulties cannot be doubted, I recognise that huge progress can be made by leveraging psychological techniques. Medications can be unquestionably useful in specific situations, but their effects can often be augmented when used in conjunction with psychotherapeutic support and healthy lifestyle decisions. Moreover, I regard the human body as a complex interplay of various systems, each uniquely and powerfully impacted by different lifestyle factors, such as movement, sleep, sunlight, nutrition and connection with others. For this reason, I believe in promoting a healthy style of living and providing psycho-education to empower patients into making decisions that are conducive to a fulfilling and successful life. I want my patients to feel that we are tackling their difficulties together as two people on the same team, that their experiences and opinions are valid and that my expertise is at their disposal, to use and implement as they see fit.

My approach to medication

Psychopharmacology can be incredibly useful across a variety of mental health conditions, in many instances I do explore medication as an option for my patients, I take time to discuss the pros and cons with them so that they feel empowered, instead of fearful or ashamed, by their decision to use or not use medication. I have significant experience using medication to treat a wide range of mental health problems. Whenever possible, I am very keen to explore other treatment options, including psycho-education, psychotherapy or lifestyle changes as an adjuvant to medication.

Training and education

I finished my Medical studies to become a Medical Doctor in Spain in 2001. I then completed my training in Psychiatry at Bellvitge Hospital, Barcelona, Spain, in 2006. I completed a Masters in Affective Neuroscience at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, specialising in Anxiety, Depression and related disorders. I have also completed a Masters degree in Research Methodology in Health Sciences at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2007. My personal interests

I have many and varied interests. I am a keen piano player, both classical and jazz as well as improvisation.

As a teenager, I qualified as a massage therapist and have pursued many disciplines of lifestyle medicine, such as nutrition, craniosacral therapy and osteopathy. I retain my interest in nutrition today and pay close attention to developing research trends that demonstrate the prevailing power of diet in the gut-brain axis.

Although I do not hold any official qualifications in lifestyle medicine, such as functional medicine practitioner, I have a cautious interest in its development. In particular, I am intrigued about the potential use of ketogenic diets in mental health. I am also interested in therapeutic fasting, and Longevity Medicine, which seeks to optimise and elongate lifespan.

I also enjoy philosophy (Eastern and Western), economic theory and the psychology and behaviour of the financial markets, and, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, in particular how they can be applied to healthcare.

Private medical insurance

I am recognised by Aviva, Allianz Healthcare, Bupa Global (International) CIGNA, WPA
If you are affiliated with a different insurance provider please contact me and I will let you know if I am able to register with that provider.

Patient success stories

I am 26 and when I was 24 I was diagnosed with type 1 bipolar... I immediately experienced a good rapport with Dr Pertusa and am content with continuing treatment from him… Dr Pertusa understood and respected my own wish regarding medication. Petusa's holistic approach to treatment is based on a deep, respectful relationship between me (patient) and him, a psychiatrist. I never felt pressured to take Lithium or any other medications, although he did encourage me regularly to consider this… I would also like to mention how brilliant Jennifer and Kirsty (Dr Pertusa’s Secretaries) are. They have an amazing bedside manner and I enjoy their phone calls. The secretaries are great with communicating with my dad. - Jenna, 26
Thank you so much for your time today. I really appreciate it and feel relieved and touched. I will let you know how the medication goes. - Patient - M.M
He was very helpful, listened to me carefully and tried to find the best possible solution for what I'm going through at the moment. I'm very thankful - Patient. - V.A.
“The day I saw Dr Pertusa was the day I knew I was going to be OK.” - Alice, 32
It was so good to meet you last week with my daughter, and I was truly impressed by the very broad reaching way you approached her situation and issues. I feel truly fortunate that we have been put in touch with you. - Parent of patient - A.M
Thank you so much for this and please pass on my sincerest thanks to Dr Pertusa. He really does go above and beyond to help me and I appreciate it so much - Patient: E.H.
Thank you very much for your excellent service and understanding of my situation, this is a big weight off my shoulders. Dr Pertusa is a very nice and knowledgeable psychiatrist and I plan on using his services on a more regular basis when I move back to the UK after my graduation - Patient: M.P.
Dear Dr. Alberto, I thank you for your kindness and I wanted to say that I really appreciate the help you have provided me in the last year. I wish you all the best for the future and we will be in touch again! Patient. - A.M.
As always, thank you very much for what you do for my son. He is very fond of you - and rightly so, in my view. Parent of patient T.N.
Really I have no words to thank you for your support and help. On a professional level, I always knew you are an amazing psychiatrist and a truly abreast of the most interesting ways of working with people. But experiencing your consultation and being on the other side was really “something extraordinary”.

I always refer patients to you as they benefit so much from your out of the box approach yet done with care and warmth! But now I will send patients with even more rigour and passion knowing what they get from you will be unmatchable. - J, 34
