A second opinion is simply an assessment that is done by an additional, independent doctor who is able to cast a fresh pair of eyes over your case. You may have already been given a diagnosis, but you aren’t sure if it’s correct or fits what you’re experiencing. On the other hand, you may have been told there is nothing wrong at all, but you still don’t feel right. Or, you may be in agreement with your current diagnosis, but feel that your treatment plan is not working well enough or is not suited to you.
Our psychiatrists are happy to provide second opinions and will work in conjunction with your existing clinician. If you feel that your current diagnosis, or lack thereof, does not sit quite right, we’re here to help. With your consent, our psychiatrists can request copies of your medical records in order to review your history ahead of having an appointment with you. At your second opinion consultation, they would discuss your medical history in detail, your current symptoms and your existing treatment plan. They will listen to any concerns you may have and explore what currently is and isn’t working for you. After your consultation, the psychiatrist will produce a report detailing their objective opinion about your case and their recommendations for your treatment plan.
Whilst our psychiatrists will take great care to review your case, your history and do their best to understand your lived experience, in some instances their opinion may well be similar to your existing clinician’s diagnosis or treatment plan.
We offer a specialist second opinion service, both face-to-face and remotely for patients from all over the world, covering everything from complex circumstances to deciding on treatment options. Sometimes, your original clinician may request a second opinion, particularly if your case is a complex one. Or they feel that their current treatment plan for you is not optimal and they would like additional expertise to formulate a better treatment plan for you.
You may have multiple reasons why you could be considering a second opinion, including:
If you’re worried that your symptoms aren’t improving or if you feel uncertain about your diagnosis, it’s never too late to get a fresh point of view in the form of a second opinion. We understand that going through an episode or experiencing symptoms can be distressing, and usually, additional reassurance from another expert can help to ease your worries.
If your current treatment plan isn’t effective, or perhaps you’re suffering with unwanted side effects, then a second opinion could be helpful. Perhaps you haven’t explored other evidence-based approaches, which could include alternative medications or non-pharmacological options. Our psychiatrists will take their time to look at your individual circumstances and symptoms, before offering personalised treatment recommendations to suit your needs.
You might also feel that you’ve been misunderstood by previous doctors and that your current diagnosis doesn’t fit your symptoms. Our psychiatrists will always take a non-judgemental and open-minded approach when assessing your case.
Our psychiatrists are all highly experienced in providing second opinions, so you can choose the psychiatrist who you feel is best suited to your personal preferences.
If you’re unsure about who would be the most suitable psychiatrist for your condition, our team of experienced and friendly practice managers will help you to find the right fit. Our psychiatrists cover a whole range of mental health conditions with expertise in each field, so rest assured we can find the right psychiatrist for you.
In most cases, your insurer should be able to pay for a second opinion assessment.
However, this will need to be discussed with your insurance company before booking an appointment, as policies vary.
Our experienced and friendly team of practice managers will be happy to help you liaise with your insurance company to see if this can be covered for you.
